Fire extinguisher hydrostatic testing and maintenance for Massachusetts workplaces
Beyond the yearly inspection, most extinguishers need internal maintenance every 6 years and a hydrostatic pressure test every 5 or 12 years, depending on the type. We track those dates for every unit you own and handle the work when it comes due.

By extinguisher type
Which extinguishers need what, and when
The schedule depends on what's inside the cylinder. Under NFPA 10, the common workplace types break down like this:
- Stored-pressure dry chemical (most ABC office and warehouse units). Internal maintenance every 6 years and a hydrostatic test every 12.
- Carbon dioxide (CO2), often used near electrical equipment. A hydrostatic test every 5 years.
- Water and foam. A hydrostatic test every 5 years.
- Halon and clean agent (often near servers and electronics). Internal maintenance every 6 years and a hydrostatic test every 12.
OSHA 1910.157 also requires workplace extinguishers to be hydrostatically tested on a set schedule. Every type also needs the monthly look by your staff and our annual inspection, where we identify each unit and note its dates.

What the work involves
What happens during testing and maintenance
These services go further than an inspection. The extinguisher is opened, examined or pressure tested, then recharged.
6-year internal maintenance
The unit is emptied and opened so the cylinder, valve and internal parts can be examined. It's then refilled, recharged and labeled with the service date.
Hydrostatic pressure test
The cylinder is filled with water and pressurized above its normal working pressure to prove it can still hold pressure safely. A cylinder that fails is taken out of service.
Recharged and ready
Anything opened for maintenance or testing has to be recharged before it goes back on the wall, so it's ready the moment it's needed.
Exchange programTest or replace
For some older or smaller units, a new extinguisher can make more sense than testing the old one. We'll tell you which, and we won't sell you what you don't need.

How we keep your extinguishers in date
-
1
We note the dates
During the annual inspection we note the manufacture and last test dates on each cylinder, along with its type.
-
2
We flag what's coming
Before a 6-year service or hydrostatic test comes due, we tell you which units are affected and what each one needs.
-
3
You decide, we schedule it
We explain the why, what and how for each unit. Once you approve, we schedule the service and keep the record.
Why it matters
Records do more than keep the inspector happy
An inspection tag shows this year’s check, not when a cylinder was last opened or pressure tested. Keeping those dates for every unit means you can show your fire inspector both, and an expired test is easy to miss because the extinguisher still looks fine on the wall.
Detailed records also show patterns that point to a recurring problem or a unit that should be replaced instead of serviced again. For businesses across Eastern and Central Massachusetts, we’ll set up a maintenance schedule built around your units.

Every 5 years for water, foam and CO2 extinguishers, and every 12 years for stored-pressure dry chemical, halon and clean agent units, under NFPA 10. Stored-pressure dry chemical units also need internal maintenance every 6 years in between.
Look for a hydrostatic test label on the cylinder, or a date stamped into it. The manufacture date is usually stamped on the cylinder too. If you can't find them, we'll check during the inspection and record them for you.
It's an internal examination for stored-pressure dry chemical units. The extinguisher is emptied and opened, its parts are checked, and it's refilled and recharged. It's due 6 years after the date of manufacture. The clock restarts after a hydrostatic test, or after any recharge where the unit is emptied and examined inside.
It's removed from service and can't be refilled. We'll tell you what replacement suits that location, and we can supply a new Amerex unit.
Yes. We keep a record of every unit and remind you before each service is due, so you don't have to keep your own calendar.
