The right type for the room
Which fire extinguisher does each area need?
The right extinguisher depends on what could burn in that room. NFPA 10 groups fires into classes, and each class needs an agent rated for it:
- Offices, stores and warehouses (Class A). Paper, wood, cardboard and plastics. A multipurpose ABC dry chemical extinguisher covers these, and most workplaces too.
- Garages, shops and fuel storage (Class B). Flammable liquids and gases. An ABC or BC dry chemical unit with a Class B rating.
- Server rooms and delicate electronics. ABC units are rated for electrical fires, but the powder can damage the equipment, so CO2 or a clean agent unit is often the better choice.
- Hotels and apartment buildings. Corridors, common areas and offices are usually covered by ABC units placed within the required travel distance. Parking garages, boiler rooms and maintenance shops may need units with a higher Class B rating.
- Labs that handle combustible metals (Class D). Metals like magnesium need a dry powder agent made for that metal. Ordinary extinguishers can make these fires worse.
- Clean rooms and other special hazards. Equipment designed for that hazard. Tell us what's in the room and we'll recommend the right unit.
We see these rooms on our own service visits, from apartment buildings and large pharmaceutical companies in Waltham to hotels and industrial businesses in Woburn.

Before you buy
Sizes, and what drives the price
Portable extinguishers are sold by the weight of agent inside. Common workplace sizes run from small 2.5 lb units for vehicles and tight spaces, through 5 and 10 lb units for most offices and shops, up to 20 lb units for warehouses and high-hazard areas. A bigger unit carries a higher rating, so it can cover more floor area, but it's also heavier to carry and mount.
The price of equipping a building comes down to how many extinguishers the code calls for, which types (CO2 and clean agent cost more than ABC dry chemical), their sizes, and whether you also need cabinets or signage. Tell us about the space and we'll give you a quote for exactly that, with nothing extra.

FAQ
Buying fire extinguishers
Anything else, call us at 978-365-9100.
It depends on the floor area, the hazards and the extinguishers' ratings. NFPA 10 limits how far anyone should have to walk to reach one: no more than 75 feet for ordinary combustibles, and 30 or 50 feet for flammable liquids, depending on the extinguisher's rating. Tell us about the building and we'll work out the count.
Usually CO2 or a clean agent extinguisher, because they don't leave powder on the equipment. We'll tell you whether your current units are right for expensive or delicate electronics.
It depends on what's in each room. Offices and most lab space are covered by ABC units, flammable-liquid storage needs a unit with the right Class B rating, delicate instruments are better protected by CO2 or clean agent, and combustible metals need a Class D agent. Tell us what each room is used for and we'll match the extinguishers to it.
Yes. Whether you're opening a new building or expanding into new space, we'll recommend the extinguishers each area needs and provide them in a timely fashion, then explain the why, what and how of each one.
Yes. A new extinguisher needs the monthly visual check by your staff and an annual inspection like any other. For stored-pressure dry chemical units, the 6-year maintenance and 12-year hydrostatic test count from the date of manufacture. See our testing and maintenance page for each type's schedule.
