Exchange program · No downtime

Fire Extinguisher Exchange Program Refurbished Replacements, No Downtime

An extinguisher that has been used, even for a second, or whose gauge needle has dropped into the red can't protect anyone. With FireSafe's exchange program you don't wait for it to be serviced. We replace it with a comparable unit that has been completely refurbished, so you're never left without protection.

Signs it needs service

When should a fire extinguisher be exchanged?

Any of these means the extinguisher can't be trusted until it's serviced. Through the exchange program it's replaced with a comparable, completely refurbished unit, instead of that spot sitting unprotected.

  • After any use. A short burst still empties part of the cylinder and drops the pressure. A partly used extinguisher may quit halfway through the next fire.
  • The needle is in the red. Extinguishers can lose pressure over time without anyone touching them. If the gauge needle has left the green, the unit needs attention.
  • The pin or seal is missing. With a pulled pin or broken tamper seal, you can't be sure it hasn't been used, so have it checked before you rely on it.
  • An inspection found a problem. Our annual inspection can turn up issues you won't spot on a monthly look, like internal wear or an extinguishing agent that has degraded.

How it works

How the exchange program works

  1. 1

    Tell us what needs service

Call 978-365-9100 or send a request with your address, how many extinguishers have been used or lost pressure, and their type and size if you know it.

  2. 2

    We bring matching replacements

For each one we bring a comparable extinguisher, the same type and size as yours, that has been completely refurbished and is ready to use.

  3. 3

    We make the swap

The refurbished unit goes on the bracket and your used one leaves with us. The building stays protected, and nobody on your staff hauls extinguishers anywhere.

Exchange vs. waiting on service

Why an exchange beats waiting on service

We'll tell you which option makes sense for each unit, and we won't sell you a new extinguisher you don't need.

No gap in protection

If a used extinguisher is taken away for service, that spot is empty, or covered by a used unit, until it comes back. With an exchange, a ready extinguisher is on the bracket the whole time.

Comparable, not downgraded

Each replacement matches the type and size of the unit it replaces, so it's suited to the same hazard in the same spot.

Completely refurbished

Exchange units have been completely refurbished, so the replacement on your wall is ready to protect your building from the moment it goes up.

Some units are replaced instead

Some units, like disposable extinguishers or damaged cylinders, may need replacing instead of exchanging. NFPA 10 takes non-rechargeable dry chemical units out of service 12 years after manufacture. We'll tell you what applies.

New extinguishers

Between visits

Catch it early with a monthly look

NFPA 10 asks someone on your staff to glance at each extinguisher once a month. It takes seconds: is the unit in its place, is the pin and seal intact, and is the gauge needle in the green? If any answer is no, call us for an exchange rather than waiting for the yearly visit.

Our annual inspection catches the rest, and any used or low-pressure unit can go through the exchange program. If your own extinguishers are close to their 6-year maintenance or hydrostatic test, see testing and maintenance, or browse all our fire extinguisher services.

FAQ

Exchange program questions

Anything else, call us at 978-365-9100.

When an extinguisher has been used or lost pressure, we replace it with a comparable unit, the same type and size, that has been completely refurbished and is ready to use. Your extinguisher leaves with us and the replacement stays on your wall.

No. That's the point of the exchange. You get a comparable, completely refurbished replacement in place of the used unit, so there's no downtime.

FireSafe serves workplaces across Eastern and Central Massachusetts from our shop at 880 Main St., Unit D, in Woburn. We swap used or low-pressure extinguishers for comparable, completely refurbished units. Call 978-365-9100 to set up an exchange.

Yes. Any discharge, however short, lowers the pressure and uses up agent. The extinguisher may not have enough left for a real fire, so it should be exchanged before you rely on it again.

Not always. Disposable extinguishers, usually the ones with a plastic valve, are meant to be replaced once used, and NFPA 10 removes non-rechargeable dry chemical units from service 12 years after manufacture. Damaged cylinders may also need replacing. We'll tell you which applies to yours.

It depends on the type and size of each extinguisher and how many you have. Tell us what needs service and we'll get back to you with a quote.
